What is the UK but monarchy cloaked in the robes of democracy, wrestling with the question of what it has become post-empire and, after years of Brexit fallout, still unsure what it wants to be when it grows up? Labour props up the status quo even as Nigel Farage taps into the far-right sentiment fostered by years of managed decline, offering anger and resentment as a substitute for solutions.

In contrast, the Green Party stands as the most openly left-wing force with national reach, with Zack Polanski making the case that climate justice is economic justice, while socialists like Jeremy Corbyn’s Your Party chip away at the donor-led status quo. 

All this is producing a political landscape where the appetite for change is enormous, but the tools on offer look suspiciously like the ones that broke the system in the first place, and somehow we, leftist fools, still manage to remain hopeful.
