OH HONEY, READ A HISTORY BOOK…

It’s almost adorable — in a bleak, end-of-democracy sort of way — how today’s far-right movements behave like they’ve just invented authoritarianism. As if no one has ever tried this before. As if the history books aren’t basically a 2,000-page warning label screaming: “THIS GOES BADLY.”

The pattern is so reliable it’s practically a natural law. Fascists rise by blaming minorities for everything from economic crises to bad weather, wrap themselves in flags big enough to cover the corruption, and insist they alone can fix the mess they caused. Then — shock twist — it all collapses under the weight of its own cruelty and incompetence. Every. Single. Time.

But here we are again: Britain flirting with proto-authoritarians who think human rights are optional if the polling’s right, and the US entertaining the idea of giving Trump another go. The far right is very loud about “learning from history,” yet strangely quiet about how every fascist project ends — in disgrace, destruction, or a bunker with terrible interior design. So yes, read a history book. Not because you’ll enjoy it, but because it’ll save you from mistaking a marching mob for a movement with a future.
