The cold morning got a lot more chilly as masked men with guns arrived and turned the street into a butcher’s shop. We watched from behind half-drawn blinds as ICE dragged neighbors into vans, breaking up families and destroying communities. “Law and order,” the media kept repeating. It’s what all the history books warned us about, yet here we are.
By the time the commute begins, apathy settles in. The trauma is already being overwritten by a frantic, neon stream of distraction, domesticating our outrage until it’s just another form of fatigue. We trade our neighbors for the safety of the status quo, marching into the 9-to-5 maw, desperate to be seen as “essential” to a syatem that views us as disposable.
We are no longer a society; we are a managed forest being cleared for a highway. Bound by burnout and blinded by the algorithm, we are the cogs in a machine we are too tired to escape.
