Don’t get us wrong. Having a positive attitude is crucial as nothing in this world gets done without the belief that things will work out. But what if the so called Law of Attraction – #theuniversehasyourback – is little more than the result of the various forms of unearned privilege that exist in our society, such as white, male, straight, able-bodied, cis-gender, middle-class, and country-of-origin privilege. These aspects of our identity, which we did not actively work towards, provide us with inherent advantages in both our personal and professional lives, resulting in the experience of what we call “Manifesting”.

Our ability to achieve things in life is influenced by our privilege, upbringing, and circumstances. Moreover, what if the uber-spiritual and somewhat arrogant Law of Attraction crowd, with their belief that one can simply “manifest” good and bad experiences based on their “vibration,” is no different and no less bigoted than right-wing Tories and Republicans who believe that “poor people are just lazy and do not deserve good things”? Like if you’re struggling, you are just a “bad manifestor”. That’s bullshit. It’s the same old game of oneupmanship. The ultimate ego trip. At the very least, we should all be aware of the impact of our unique privilege. We should be kinder to people. All people. After all, we’re all in this together. Namaste.
