So what on Earth is Fracking?
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a controversial technique designed to recover gas and oil from shale rock at a huge cost to the environment.
It takes a gazillion gallons of water to complete each fracturing job. Additionally, up to 600 chemicals are used in fracking fluid, including known carcinogens. This cocktail of chemicals (plus large amounts of methane gas) contaminates nearby groundwater and causes irreversible environmental and health problems. Throwing money at fossil fuels to when the Earth desperately needs investment in clean energy to tackle climate change is silly, but the oil giants think they can get away with it.
