ALAN WATTS TEE. FINALLY!
Alan Watts was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker who played a significant role in popularising Eastern philosophy and spirituality in the Western world during the mid-20th century. One of his famous quotes is “Man suffers because he takes seriously what the gods made for fun.” In this quote, Watts refers to “the gods,” which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the natural world and the forces that govern it. He suggests that the natural world operates according to its own whims and caprices, which can be both beautiful and destructive.
As an activist, I see this quote as a call to action. In my view, the gods are not the forces of nature, but the structures of power and oppression that have been created by humans themselves.
Human beings have created social, economic, and political systems that perpetuate inequality, discrimination, and exploitation. We take these systems seriously and allow them to dictate our lives, even though they were created for the benefit of a privileged few. We need to challenge these systems and fight for social justice and equality. We cannot afford to take the status quo for granted and accept the suffering it causes. Instead, we need to embrace the playful and creative spirit that Watts speaks of, and use it to imagine and build a better world.
We need to recognise that the problems we face are not natural or inevitable, but the result of human choices and actions. By challenging these choices and actions, we can create a world that is more just, equitable, and sustainable.
