The Democratic Party has long championed reproductive rights, but as Roe v. Wade crumbled, it became clear that words alone weren’t enough. The promise to protect Roe has been a rallying cry, yet the time has come for the party to move beyond using it as a scare tactic to mobilise voters. Instead, it’s time to act.

Codifying Roe into law is a moral imperative. It’s about honouring the rights and autonomy of millions of women across the country who deserve the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies without fear of government interference. Using Roe as a political tool to drive voter turnout while leaving its protections vulnerable is a betrayal of the very values the party claims to uphold. Codifying Roe would send a clear message: that reproductive rights are non-negotiable, that women’s autonomy is not up for debate, and that the party is committed to protecting these rights once and for all.
