Orwell’s line hits because it feels uncomfortably familiar. You watch something happen right in front of you: ICE vans in your neighbourhood, people taken at dawn, kids crying, and then you’re told it’s just law enforcement officers doing their jobs. The normalisation of fascism is not what we expected to see from a failed businessman and a reality TV star. After a while, the pressure isn’t just to accept the explanation, but to doubt your own memory.
That kind of distortion was central to Trump-era authoritarianism. The cruelty was public, almost performative, but always wrapped in softer language: “law and order,” “border security,” “just enforcing the rules.” Media cycles helped blur it further, turning real harm into endless debate panels and competing takes, until facts felt optional and outrage felt exhausting.
Orwell understood that this is where things really break down. When you stop trusting your eyes and ears, you stop trusting yourself. And once that happens, power doesn’t need to hide anymore, it just needs you to look away.
